Analysis Studio Security – Executive Summary

Reliably and accurately delivering security is of paramount importance to organizations because security both protects information and provides the role appropriate views required to carry out one's job responsibilities.

Because organizations progress rapidly through several levels of their Cognos implementation in a short time frame, it is important to understand security concerns and design issues well in advance of the deployment. This paper provides a discussion of key issues to consider when designing a security strategy for Analysis Studio.

Through interviews we have found that security implementation is often on the critical path of every project. Because accurate and reliable security implementation is so critical, companies must devote significant efforts to automation in order to minimize the human element required to administer security.

In the paper we provide a case study to describe the steps for the HiLight Company to create security. Though HiLight has a small security implementation by most standards, it is surprising to learn that more than 4,500 steps are required to manually implement a small security scheme.

Utilities exist to automate security. ProTools we describe in this paper addresses several key issues: notably, that a granular security policy coupled with a "union of groups" provide a reliable policy and flexible deployment strategy.
